"CHI TOWN": The New Opera "MIKADO" in Chicago!　シカゴ版：オペラ「ミカド」！

　シカゴ・リリック・オペラが昨年末、オペラ "The MIKADO"を上演! 勿論、学期末で超多忙だったし、みるのは不可能だったけれど ─メディアによると、その音楽的な出来に加えて、特に新演出による舞台衣装や装置の美しさは、溜息ものだったとか。

Lyric's mirthful 'Mikado' banishes the chill of winter

　1885年にロンドンで初上演されたという"The Mikado"は、当時、東洋の遠い未知の国と想定されていた日本が舞台で、登場するミカドも明治天皇のイメージだ…欧米では昔から人気が高く、アマチュア層のオペレッタの定番の演目などとしても上演頻度も高いという　 …しかし、日本人には皇太子ナンキ・プーやKoko、Yum Yumといった登場人物は、荒唐無稽すぎて少し受けいれがたいものもある、そのため日本では近年まで、ほとんど上演されなかったとか（そのためにタイトル以外は、やや馴染みが薄い？）

　─しかし今回のChicagoバージョンは、19世紀のImperial Japanの大礼服など極彩色なイメージが、ビジュアル的にも最高…ではないか。未曾有なレトロジャパンを満載した美しい舞台デザインが、慌しいこの年末、寒さでガサついた心を慰める季節の贈り物として評判を呼んでいたようなのだ。　目一杯に綺麗な日本物の新演出は、経済不況の世相のなかで、米国人が「今、見たいイメージを満載した」のかもしれない感じだった。こんなgorgeousなグッド・オールド・ジャパンをシカゴアンだけが堪能しているのだろうか？

[Wikipediaにはこうもある]： …「戦前、天皇をからかっているという理由で、在連合王国日本国大使館が英国外務省に抗議し、（『ミカド』の）上演禁止を要請したという噂もあるが、真偽のほどは定かではない。日本国内では、外国人向けのホテルなどで題名を伏せたり見張りつきで上演したという話も残っている…　1907年に伏見宮博恭王が日露戦争の際の英国の協力への返礼のため国賓として訪英した折、英国政府はロンドン中の劇場やミュージック・ホールに対して喜歌劇『ミカド』の上演および抜粋の演奏を禁止した。が、当の伏見宮はロンドンではやりの、しかも日本を舞台にした喜歌劇を聴けなかったことを残念がったという…」

(My comment) It seems to be the classic comedy opera "The Mikado" featured the image of 19C imperial Japan, the story is located in an exotic, far east country... But historically Japanese people haven't really been inclined to see this opera, because it appeared to be mocking the Japanese emperor.. the story and the characters' names sound stupid or preposterous... so, it seems to be almost never played in Japan until JUST recently.. But maybe we should forget about preposterousness...? or give up sticking to the past, since the latest Chicago version of "The Mikado" - of Gilbert and Sullivan- seems abandunt with rich, fantasic images of good-old Japan.. (I thought American production designer must have created this posh stage and costumes.. just as the image which they wanted to see in this bleak economic situation..?) 　

　ところで日本物といえば、3年前にHaruki Murakami物の芝居を躍進中のシカゴのローカル劇団ステップンウルフ・シアターが上演していたのも思い出す…知り合いの米人俳優は「自分はあの演出、あまり買わない」と酷評していたけれど─Steppenwolf版の　"海辺のカフカKafka on the Shore"は、パブリシティ的にはめだっていた…（海外で評判の高い新しい日本作家の作品を新脚色した芝居とあり、内陸の閉ざされたこのシカゴの街では大分新鮮さがある。TVのローカルニュースでみた演出家も何となく得意気、ノリノリ？にもみえた）
